Imagine dedicating your life to education, shaping young minds, and then, at the age of 80, receiving the ultimate recognition for your tireless efforts. This is the inspiring story of Mr. Kwabena Amponsah, the owner of Adwinsa Publications, who was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Mr. Amponsah's honorary degree, a Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa, acknowledges his immense contributions to Ghana's educational landscape. He's a true champion of learning! His impact stems from both his teaching career and his publishing endeavors, which have significantly improved the quality of education for countless students.
At the university's 59th congregation in Kumasi, Mr. Amponsah was one of six individuals honored. His journey in education spans across all levels, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing young minds from the very beginning.
He taught at various schools, including Labawaleshie Middle School, Tetentaa Middle School, Adisadel College, Oda Senior High School (SHS), Tweneboa Kodua (SHS), and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), leaving a lasting impact on each institution.
In 1977, Mr. Amponsah established Adwinsa Publications, a venture that would further solidify his legacy. He made a pivotal decision in 1978, resigning from teaching to fully dedicate himself to his publishing business. His goal was clear: to support the underprivileged in education and healthcare within his community.
But here's where it gets controversial... Mr. Amponsah's publishing house has produced a vast array of educational materials. He published numerous educational books covering approximately 16 subjects for the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the Ministry of Education, targeting both Basic and Secondary levels. Subjects included English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Religious and Moral Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Education, Creative Arts, and Textiles.
Beyond these, he authored three books, including ‘Topics on West African Traditional Region’ (Volumes One and Two), intended for Advanced Level Religious Studies and General Paper, and ‘Studies in St Luke, Matthew, Mark and Acts of the Apostles for ‘O’ Level students.’ He also published non-formal literary books in 15 languages, showcasing his dedication to making education accessible to a wide audience.
Mr. Amponsah's contributions extend beyond the classroom and publishing house. He established the Adwinsa Prayer and Retreat Centre, a Presbyterian Church of Ghana Preaching Point at Adwinsa Village, and the North Legon Education Complex with his wife. This demonstrates his holistic approach to community development, intertwining faith and education.
Since 1984, he has also been involved in training students in the industry at KNUST. He has six children.
Following the ceremony, Mr. Amponsah, a native of Nsoatre in the Sunyani West District of the Bono Region, expressed his profound gratitude to the university's management, Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the University Council for the recognition.
He humbly stated that he was unaware of the impact of his work on Ghana's educational system. He dedicated himself to the cause without expecting any recognition.
“I never knew that someone elsewhere was taking notice of my hard work in the educational system. I am honoured and grateful for the honorary degree bestowed to me,” Mr. Amponsah said.
And this is the part most people miss... Mr. Amponsah clarified that he is a graduate of the University of Ghana and UCC, not KNUST.
He advised teachers and others to be hardworking, honest, and kind, emphasizing these qualities as the foundation of his success.
Currently, his third-born, Mr. Kwaku Oppong Amponsah, manages the firm, as he retired in 2018.
