Keshad Johnson Crowned Slam Dunk Champion in a Thrilling Showdown!
Get ready for some electrifying news from NBA All-Star Saturday! Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat has officially claimed the coveted Slam Dunk title, narrowly outmaneuvering a seemingly unstoppable force in San Antonio rookie Carter Bryant. Bryant had been on a roll, achieving perfect scores on his initial dunks, but Johnson’s incredible athleticism and flair ultimately secured him the win.
For his show-stopping final dunk, Johnson took an audacious leap from behind the judges' table, launching himself from the free throw line to execute a breathtaking one-handed windmill jam. His earlier dunk, a dazzling between-the-legs move, had already set a high bar and earned him a superior score.
But here's where it gets controversial... Carter Bryant, in the final round, delivered a dunk that was nothing short of spectacular. He bounced the ball, caught it between his legs, and finished with a powerful right-handed slam, earning a perfect 50.0 from every single judge. This was a truly flawless display of skill!
However, Bryant faced a significant challenge on his second dunk. After missing his first two attempts, and even pausing to confer with NBA legend Vince Carter, he struggled to land his intended reverse dunk after bouncing the ball off the glass. It tantalizingly rolled around the rim and out. He eventually settled for a less spectacular but successful dunk on his third and final try. Was the pressure of perfection too much to handle?
Despite Bryant's incredible first dunk, it wasn't quite enough to overcome Johnson's overall performance, ushering in a new slam dunk champion. Johnson, beaming, accepted the trophy from the legendary Julius Erving, after a gracious handshake with all the judges.
Johnson’s inspiring words to aspiring athletes were: “All the kids out there, keep dreaming, anything can happen. I just came out here and showed people.” His infectious joy was evident as he danced onto the court and celebrated his victory.
Interestingly, three-time dunk champion Mac McClung, who had achieved a perfect contest last year, did not participate this year. He was the only competitor in history to have achieved perfect scores on all his dunks in a single contest.
This year’s competition featured a four-man field, a trend that has continued for the fifth consecutive year. Alongside Johnson and Bryant were Jaxson Hayes of the Lakers and Jase Richardson of Orlando, though they did not advance to the final round.
In the first round, Johnson wowed the crowd by bringing out rapper E-40. After an initial miss, Johnson soared over E-40’s bowed head, slamming the ball down with his left hand behind his head – a truly memorable and daring feat!
The judging panel was comprised of esteemed basketball royalty: Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, Dwight Howard, Corey Maggette, and Brent Barry.
Damian Lillard Dominates the 3-Point Contest!
Even though he's not actively playing this season, Damian Lillard proved he's still a force to be reckoned with by clinching the 3-point contest title over Devin Booker! This marks Lillard's third title, tying him with Larry Bird and Craig Hodges for the most in the contest's history. The defending champion, Tyler Herro, was absent this year.
Lillard delivered a stellar performance in the final round, scoring 30 points. He edged out Devin Booker, who started strong but couldn't maintain his momentum, finishing with 27 points. Booker, a previous champion in 2018, was left to ponder what might have been.
Lillard's playful jab at Booker – “I was praying for his downfall” – added a touch of competitive spirit to the event. Charlotte Hornets standout rookie Kon Knueppel secured third place with 17 points, showing a hint of disappointment with the result.
Lillard's journey to this third title has been impressive. He first won in 2023 with the Portland Trail Blazers and again the following year with Milwaukee. Despite currently rehabbing a torn left Achilles tendon, he expressed his commitment to the NBA, stating he'd always be ready to compete.
“That’s all I do it for, keep adding to my legacy,” Lillard shared, emphasizing his dedication to his career.
In the first round, Booker was the top scorer with 30 points, while Knueppel and Lillard were tied for second with 27 points.
The atmosphere was electric as Lillard fired away in the final round, with fans at the Intuit Dome holding up red umbrellas, signaling that he was “making it rain” three-pointers.
Lillard’s advice for aspiring shooters is simple: “You just got to let the ball fly, trust your instincts as a shooter, and you can’t get ruffled when someone else gets hot.”
Eliminated in the first round were notable players like Donovan Mitchell, Tyrese Maxey, Norman Powell, Jamal Murray, and Bobby Portis Jr.
The event was graced by a star-studded celebrity lineup, including Spike Lee, Magic Johnson, Queen Latifah, James Worthy, comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Chris Tucker, and singer Joey Fatone. Ludacris provided an energetic performance before the dunk contest.
Team Knicks Victorious in Shooting Stars Contest!
Team Knicks, featuring Karl-Anthony Towns, Allan Houston, and Jalen Brunson, has clinched the Shooting Stars trophy with an impressive 47 points! The New York faithful, including a grinning Spike Lee, cheered from the sidelines.
They mounted a dramatic comeback in the final seconds to defeat Team Cameron, comprised of Kon Knueppel, Jalen Johnson, and Corey Maggette, who finished with 38 points. This marked the return of the Shooting Stars contest after a hiatus since 2015.
Jalen Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson, a current Knicks assistant coach, served as the “celebrity” passer for the winning team, adding a special family dynamic to the victory.
Team Cameron, a nod to their shared alma mater of Duke, received passes from actor-comedian Anthony Anderson.
Teams Harper (Ron Harper Jr., Dylan Harper, and Ron Harper) and Team All-Star (Richard Hamilton, Chet Holmgren, and Scottie Barnes) were eliminated after the first round.
In this fast-paced contest, teams had 70 seconds to score points by shooting from seven designated spots on the court, with all three players on a team taking turns at each location.
