French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the vessel, known as the Grinch, is under international sanctions and is suspected of operating under a false flag. This declaration underscores the serious implications of such actions on global geopolitics. On Thursday morning, the French navy, supported by allies including the United Kingdom, boarded the ship during its route between Spain and Morocco. Upon inspection, French maritime officials confirmed their suspicions about the legitimacy of the ship's flagged registration.
Interestingly, Russia's embassy in Paris claimed they were not notified regarding the seizure, raising questions about diplomatic communication in times of escalating tension. The so-called 'shadow fleet' operated by Russia comprises a covert group of tankers that evade Western-imposed sanctions by utilizing older vessels with ambiguous ownership or insurance details.
The Grinch was reportedly en route from Murmansk, located in northern Russia, when it was intercepted. Data from ship tracking platforms, such as MarineTraffic and VesselFinder, indicated that the tanker had been registered under the flag of Comoros.
In a statement made on X, Macron declared, "We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions." He further noted that the operations of the shadow fleet are critical in financing Russia's aggressive military actions against Ukraine, emphasizing that the vessel had been "diverted" from its intended course.
Moreover, UK Defence Secretary John Healy remarked that British naval forces provided essential support in tracking the tanker, with HMS Dagger monitoring its movements through the Straits of Gibraltar. He asserted, "Alongside our allies, we are stepping up our response to shadow vessels to choke off the funds that fuel Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine." Notably, the UK has already sanctioned 544 vessels associated with this shadow fleet.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his approval of France's decisive action, stating it exemplifies the kind of determination needed to prevent Russian oil from funding military operations. According to financial intelligence firm S&P Global, estimates suggest that one in every five oil tankers globally may be engaged in smuggling oil from sanctioned nations.
