Imagine biting into a beloved snack, only to end up in the hospital. That’s the shocking reality for four Canadians who were hospitalized after consuming Pizza Pops, a popular frozen treat. But here’s where it gets even more alarming: the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed that 20 people across five provinces—B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick—have fallen ill due to an E. coli outbreak linked to Pillsbury brand Pizza Pops. Ages of those affected range from 1 to 87, highlighting the widespread impact of this issue.
And this is the part most people miss: E. coli isn’t just a personal health risk—it’s highly contagious. The CFIA warns that infected individuals can spread the bacteria to others for days or even weeks, even if they show no symptoms. This raises a critical question: How safe are our favorite convenience foods, and what more can be done to prevent such outbreaks?
In response, a national recall has been issued for specific Pizza Pops products. These include:
- Pepperoni and Bacon Pizza Snacks in 760-gram and 2.85-kilogram packages (best before June 9 and 10, 2026)
- Supremo Extreme Pepperoni and Bacon Snacks in three-kilogram boxes (best before June 10–12, 2026)
- Frank’s RedHot Pepperoni and Bacon in 380-gram packages (best before June 14, 2026)
General Mills, the manufacturer, has emphasized that this is a voluntary recall and that other Pillsbury Pizza Pops products are not affected. However, this incident sparks a controversial debate: Are voluntary recalls enough to protect public health, or should there be stricter regulations in place?
