Amazon to invest over $35 billion in India to advance AI and bolster exports

December 10 — Amazon (AMZN.O) announced plans to invest more than $35 billion in India through 2030 to expand its footprint by enhancing artificial intelligence capabilities and increasing exports. The move highlights India’s rising prominence as a strategic hub for cloud computing, AI, and advanced technologies amid a broader wave of investments from global tech players in Asia’s third-largest economy.
Earlier this year, major U.S. tech firms flooded India with capital, underscoring the country’s role as a key growth engine in cloud, AI, and deep‑tech sectors.
Other tech giants are matching this momentum. Microsoft (MSFT.O) committed $17.5 billion in India for AI and cloud infrastructure by 2030 — the largest Asian investment for the company to date — while Google (GOOGL.O) has pledged $15 billion over five years to establish AI data centers.
Amazon describes its plan as closely aligned with India’s national priorities. The company said the funds will accelerate AI development, strengthen logistics networks, support small businesses, and generate new jobs.
The investor push is also part of Amazon’s broader strategy to compete with Walmart-backed Flipkart and the e-commerce operations of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries (RELI.NS).
Since 2010, Amazon has invested about $40 billion in India and disclosed a $26 billion commitment in 2023. The company now projects creating an additional 1 million jobs in India by 2030 and aims to raise cumulative exports for Indian sellers from over $20 billion in the past decade to $80 billion by 2030.
India’s vast and youthful internet user base continues to attract global technology companies seeking scale in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
